Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook penne until al dente.

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and chili flakes and sauté for 60 seconds until fragrant.

Add crushed tomatoes, season with salt, and simmer for 12 minutes until sauce thickens.

Drain pasta, reserving ½ cup pasta water. Add pasta to sauce and toss, adding pasta water to loosen if needed.

Tear in fresh basil leaves and toss once more. Serve immediately topped with Pecorino Romano.
